Short Assignments (20% of course grade)
Much of what you read for this class may be new, challenging, or difficult at times. I will assign six (6) short assignments to help you navigate what you read. SAs will make use of various modes of expression--visual and alphanumeric--and they may occasionally be done in groups. Some assignments will help you to summarize a text or define critical vocabulary; others will ask you to make a network diagram of a human rights event. Overall, these assignments are vital ways of learning new material. Your best preparation is to be thoughtful with how you read prior to class and be thorough in how you complete each SA. When you read, annotate where passages don't make sense, look up unfamiliar terms in a reputable dictionary (such as the OED Online), and take notes where you see interesting relationships emerge between texts. You are not being evaluated on whether or not you like something we read, or on whether you adhere to a particular belief or stance; you are being evaluated on how clearly and thoughtfully you can communicate your ideas about the complexities of what we read.
