The Cost and Trauma of Prison

Gilmore's idea of "trauma discourse" can envelop many different kinds of trauma across the world. The hypertext project BeyondPrison brings to light the traumas that those in prison go through, as well as the traumas caused by those who have been incarcerated and then released, causing more traumas and crimes to occur. By using programs likes GRIP (Guiding Rage Into Power), inmates' traumas can be redirected, lessening the trauma to themselves and those around them. Those who have participated in projects like this that seek to lessen trauma have improved substantially and most have not returned to prison for follow-up crimes, clearly showing a decrease in traumas for all those involved.

A trauma narrative explains the trauma a group or individual goes through and how they can overcome it by sharing discourse around, usually through a published text so the circulation allows for others to understand their trauma narrative. Projects like BeyondPrison can educate those with less information about trauma of all the different forms it can take and how we can combat trauma using tools such as these. Helping those at risk of experiencing these traumas, these projects are not only helping those who have experienced trauma, but striving to eliminate these traumas before they can occur. Hypertexts explaining trauma discourses can overall affect the rates at which traumas occur in a manner that uses graphics to better illustrate these traumas to the general public.
