In-Class Visual Composing Activity

Visual Composing Activity

Option 1
Using anything available to you – Pixlr.com, Word, Wordpad, PowerPoint, Acrobat, or even Photoshop, paper/pens – try to quickly (say 15 minutes, or so) put together a color rendition of a billboard or poster that you think reflects “rhetoric” and “action” for a global HIV campaign. Then, write a group post for our course blog about what you created and why, considering things like:
  • What images were immediately available to you in the venues you looked?
  • What were the multiple powers at work on your decisions to include or exclude any image? What did you become aware of as your determining factors for what to include or exclude?
  • What desires or notions or preferences did you find yourself having to choose between (these might be cultural, personal, or academic)?
  • How much did those desires/notions/preferences align (or not align) with your "visual ethics" from SA5?
  • What surprised you about any phase of this activity?
 Option 2
Using anything available to you – Pixlr.com, Word, Wordpad, PowerPoint, Acrobat, or even Photoshop, paper/pens – try to quickly (say 15 minutes, or so) put together a color rendition of a book cover and book flyer that promote a discussion of global development among Jamaica/South Africa/New Orleans and their people. Then, write a group post for our course blog about what you created and why, considering things like:
  • What images or design elements were immediately available to you in the venues you looked?
  • What were the multiple powers at work on your decisions to include or exclude any image or design element? What did you become aware of as your determining factors for what to include or exclude?
  • What desires or notions or preferences did you find yourself having to choose between (these might be cultural, personal, or academic)?
